Saunders Beach is made up of a small community of 400 people who actively engage with local businesses where everyone helps one another out. From locals coming by for a feed or a drink in the afternoon to travelers who are passing by to stop in for something to eat and a walk along the beach. Recently Saunders Beach Bistro and Pizzeria has seen residents from Bushland Beach coming out to eat and I highly recommend other members of Townsville to visit and grab a bite to eat.

As the owner of Saunders Beach Bistro and Pizzeria, Nerin typically finds herself in the kitchen cooking delicious meals. As they are far out, she often runs into the shops to grab food and prep for the nighttime during the day while jiggling all the paperwork in between.

What made you start Capoeira Brasil Townsville?

What started as a hobby for Matthew over time became his full-time occupation. When he found out there were no Capoeira schools in Townsville, he knew it was meant to be. Starting from humble beginnings on the basketball courts at JCU in 2000, Matthew introduced it to his group of friends, where he found his passion for teaching and performing Capoeira with others. This led him to further build his business by putting classes together with others.

What are your responsibilities as a business owner?

Like most family-run small businesses, they have to wear all the hats. Matthew, his amazing wife Heidi and his children cover everything from cleaning, planning, marketing and all your typical behind the scenes of a business. While it is still a business, they don't see it as one as this is their passion. While Matthew is a business owner, he is also a teacher and a group leader to ensure everyone feels welcomed, safe and supported to make the group stronger as a whole.

Heidi is also a teacher who helps with the toddler and kid Capoeira Brasil classes while also helping out with the behind the scenes administrative and offices duties.

What was the toughest problem you had when starting?

Capoeira Brasil Townsville's biggest challenge was getting what Capoeira was all about. It still isn't today a household name that everyone knows yet. Since no one knew what Capoeira was, there was no market for it. When karate, boxing or self-defence classes open, there is a demand for it. Still, no one knew what Capoeira Brasil was all about.

They overcame this problem by performing hundreds of performances to the public across Townsville to spread awareness about what Capoeira is and the different aspects it brings. This led to others joining the school and becoming students who now perform Capoeira as a group.

What was the toughest problem you had when starting?

While there are no other Capoeira schools in Townsville, you can still relate them to other martial arts. They still have so many different aspects than your typical martial arts academy, from acrobatics, music, dance and the ability for anyone at any fitness level or age to participate.

Capoeira Townsville includes no lock-in contracts where you pay for the term, which allows you to leave if it isn't what you are after. However, that is highly unlikely as once you've begun, you're hooked. The terms are lined up with the school terms, making it easy for children of all ages and adults to participate, have fun, and build a strong connection.

In our interview, he mentioned he would like to continue growing his nursery to allow for a greater variety of plants that he can supply to people.

As he looks to grow, he plans to bring a friend on board who may even become a business partner.

What are your typical responsibilities as a business owner?

Like every small business, he has to wear all the hats from covering marketing, financials, servicing his own machines from sharpening saws, axes and chain saws.

About Sean

Sean graduated from Ignatius Park College in 2001. He completed a certificate three in Horticulture at TAFE in Townsville, majoring in landscaping. Sean then went on to work for various civil landscaping companies. Sean has always been interested in growing plants. He focused on rainforest plants from caladiums, palm trees, and coleus. Over the years, his gardening has evolved to more valuable plants such as eggplants, bromeliads, aloe vera, pawpaw and bananas.

From our interview, Sean is an amazing person who is trying to make a difference in terms of sustainability for your garden. He not only thinks about solving the problem now, he plans for the future and the impact it will have in the future.

We would like to introduce Aaron Goldwater, the owner of Resilience Sailing. Resilience Sailing is a sailing-based charity founded to help those struggling with trauma. Aaron suffered from PTSD, which led him to take a turn in his career, from being a CEO at his software company to volunteering to mentor veterans. He then became the assistant coach of the Israeli Paralympics sailing team. Aaron then met a guy running a program in Israel working with veterans, PTSD, and all victims using sailing. This led Aaron to travel to Israel, where he learned what they were doing. Eventually, he returned to Australia, where he founded Resilience Sailing in Brisbane, with his first program running in 2017, with a university involved.

Tell me about Resilience Sailing

Resilience Sailing is a sailing-based charity set up to help people who have been through trauma, who may or may not have PTSD as a result. We have worked with veterans, police, doctors, nurses, firefighters, Aborigines and domestic violence survivors who have been through many stresses and issues. We have also had mums, dads, and teenagers who loved to have fights with their parents on board with us. Sailing has rebuilt their connection by helped them understand they weren't bad people.

In 2017 a SE Queensland university was involved by collecting data that showed a significant drop in issues, PTSD and trauma. My findings were based on what people did once the program was finished. I found 80% of people either went back into a job, started a new career or opened their own businesses, and some even purchased sailing boats of their own.

What we do in the program is teach people how to sail. By learning to sail, they learn many other skills, including building confidence, teamwork, and communication as a team. Without those skills on a yacht, the boat will never go anywhere. One of the most tremendous successes about the program is everyone knew that everyone else had something going on. It was a safe environment where everyone understood that whatever was discussed on the boat, stayed on the boat. After 5 years, I can tell you nothing has ever come out as to what was discussed on the boats.

We took several people who had successfully been through the program and gave them advanced training, which allowed them to run yachts themselves. This allowed us to have 3 extra yachts sailing as we had those people who had been through the program actually teaching as well. This was good for both them and the people they were teaching.

Over the last 18 months, I have worked exclusively with women who have been through domestic violence. They have been an amazing group of women.

I moved to Townsville in 2020, where I started Resilience Sailing, operating out of the local yacht club, however COVID unfortunately set us back. Moving forward, we will be resuming the sailing program but we will also be running additional programs for recovery coaching. I have been undertaking additional training myself to be able to offer this service. Recover coaching is aimed at helping those who have been through addiction problems as well as trauma by offering a special one-on-one program. Once we come back online in late March or early April, we will be running recovery coaching for those who have been through the NDIS or those who have other issues they need to deal with.

What are your typical responsibilities as a business owner?

My responsibilities include all the financials, marketing, designing the program and running the program. It's kind of like a one-armed paper hanger. Like any small business, the owner has to try and find time to do everything.

What were the most challenging problems you had to overcome when opening?

The most challenging problem I had to overcome was COVID when opening up in Townsville.

The other problem I encountered was getting a university involved to measure the results. The Israeli guy who taught me about the course said, 'If you don't have a university involved and you don't measure the output, then it never happened, and never existed'. It is very sage advice.

After a year of going through the bureaucratic stuff with the university to get them involved, things were pretty plain sailing. We had psychology masters students from the university collect data along with junior students who were being taught various things. Occasionally we had some students come sailing with us where we learned a lot about them and how they collected the data. The data was sent back to Toowoomba for analysis. We had 2 of the students write their masters thesis on the program.

Having to start again, I would have got better finance as I was funding it myself, as many small businesses do. This situation is different starting in Townsville. We have an appropriate sized boat coming, where before we were borrowing boats all over the place. If the boat is too big, it is too daunting for beginners, and if it is too small, you can’t get enough people on it to make it viable.

Big Crystal Creek is only a short drive from Little Crystal Creek if you want to go even deeper and explore a little further. With a huge swimming hole, a vast picnic area big enough for your whole family, a natural slip 'n' slide, camping sites (permits required), and plenty of nature to explore around Big Crystal Creek.

2. Rockpool, The Strand

At The Strand Rockpool, you may unwind in a stinger-resistant seawater pool. The rockpool is conveniently located on the north side of The Strand (Townsville), close to several amenities, including toilets, tables, public barbeques and more.
